DISCOVERING THE MIND-SET.
My grandfather, Richard Filla, I regard as an absolute to my own ideas. A quiet, resourceful, imaginative, and faithful person; he built more furniture in a 20'x20' shop than most people can talk or dream of. Customers would often bring him pictures from magazines and catalogs, wanting a specific piece of furniture built with some unique modifications all for a price less than what was listed. His clipboard was filled with lists of dimensions, simple notes, and few pictures for inspiration. There were no detailed CAD construction drawings or material cut lists. And his pieces were beautiful, handcrafted, and timeless. I relentlessly aspire FILLADESIGN to mirror his character.
In the fall of 1995 I left my hometown for the tall grass prairies of Manhattan, Kansas to attend the College of Architecture, Planning, and Design at Kansas State University. I was confident that architecture was the correct path as I spent much of my time in high school at the drafting lab self-mastering the early nuances of CAD.
From a born need to complete an idea with its material counterpart, FILLADESIGN became an official company in the State of Missouri in August 2010. Steve Jobs of Apple was quoted as saying "Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do." I knew it was time to leave the office side of architecture / construction. I took the leap only looking forward.
FILLADESIGN is a design-build company at heart. Some jobs are too big and complex for our expertise, but no job is ever to small. FILLADESIGN's portfolio of work can be categorized under three main headings;
Construction - Including projects from the ground up, residential homes, small commercial offices / retail, additions, decks, garages, and landscaping walls.
Interiors - Kitchen and bath full renovations, basement finishing, hardwood floor installation, finish trim work installation, ceramic tile floors and walls, and commercial office interiors / boardrooms.
Furniture - Custom built tables and casework, concrete and tile counters / surfaces, and custom trim.
For clients that choose FILLADESIGN, the goal is to complete their idea of place through collaborative design, expert craftsmanship, and material value.
Through FILLADESIGN I am constantly researching new materials, tools, and methods of work to lower the costs of design and construction while still maintaining great craftsmanship and durability of finished materials. Every modest man and woman deserves thoughtful design and enduring materials and not just a low price.
If you like what you see, or have any questions, please drop me a line. I am always interested in speaking with people about future projects at any phase.
Little did I know, drafting floor plans of homes on CAD was no part of the curriculum. The College of Architecture was more about dreams, imagination, and devouring history than the vocational skills of an Architectural Practice. I was ignorant, but loved every day of it. Today many firms and professionals argue that graduates are not familiar with codes, details, and methods of construction upon graduation. I firmly believe a student's academic experience should not be hindered by the fussy details of practice, for he or she will have several early tedious years in professional practice to educate themselves.
The Department of Interior Architecture was where I chose to spend my last four years of study; it was the admiration for my grandfather's work that influenced the decision. It was in this department where I as a slightly 'socially inept' person could express my ideas and values mostly through the work of my hands. I draw from my experience there everyday.
